32 | Based on staff interviews, no staff have been observed to hit children, handle children roughly or use inappropriate language with children in care. Staff stated that when children show challenging behaviors, they remove children from the situation, talk with children about the behavior and about good choices. They communicate this with parents and discuss if similar behavior is observed at home and what strategies are used. For behavior that is unsafe and hurting others, they move children by carrying them. They carry them from the front, under the arms to take them to the office. They verbally communicate with the parents and if behavior continues, they send children home.
Staff stated that they maintain supervision by standing near where children are. In the outdoor area they position themselves in different places and use walkie talkies to communicate with each other. Staff do not congregate in one area and stand in separate places with eyes on the children. They also have extra staff shadow children that show challenging behaviors.
Based on children interviews, they stated that they are taken to the office to talk to Ms. Paula (director) if they don’t listen. They have not seen any teachers hurt children. Teachers use kind words.
Based on parent interviews, parents stated that children are observed to be sufficiently supervised and staff communicate with them regarding incidents and challenging behavior in a timely manner. Parents that were interviewed did not have any concerns regarding staff interactions with children.
Based on interviews, records reviewed and evidence gathered at this time, it is concluded that although the allegations listed above may have happened or are valid, there is not a preponderance of evidence to prove the alleged violations did or did not occur. The allegations are thus UNSUBSTANTIATED.
No deficiencies were cited as a result of today’s inspection. Exit interview conducted and report was reviewed with Director, Paula Walkup. Appeal rights provided.
